On 31 March 1998, the fifteen member states of the European Union (EU) began separate negotiations with six applicant countries - Hungary,Poland, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Cyprus - on the terms of these countries accession to the EU. Five other countries that have also applied for membership - Romania, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Bulgaria will begin membership negotiations as soon as their preparations are sufficiently advanced. | |||||||
